For me, Wedding Photography, especially the “Romantic” photos, is all about the Bride. “Duh” I hear many of you say and yet I have seen many Wedding Photographers try to get the bride and groom to do what they want with no regard for how they may be feeling. Prime example is at my friend’s wedding, the Photographer there insisted that she trail her hands in the decorative pond; now my friend is petrified of fish and so that was the last thing she wanted to do on a day already full of stresses, but the Photographer insisted because “will make a beautiful photo for your wall” it didn’t because my friend has this fake smile plastered on her face with eyes that clearly say she’d rather be anywhere than there
So for me the key to great Wedding Photography is to ensure that the Bride and Groom are relaxed (Well as relaxed as they can be) during the “Romantic” photos; I will of course suggest ideas that I think will work Photographically, but if they appear in the least bit hesitant about performing an action or standing a certain way, then I’ll tell them not to worry and immediately think of something else to do.
To aide this, I also insist on meeting with them both as soon as possible after they have contacted me, so that we can get to know each other and start building a rapport, and thus when the Wedding day arrives, I don’t have to spend time getting to know the bride. I can immediately start shooting without all that awkward small talk, and her wondering how I do things, thus loosing precious time in which to capture memories that will last for ever.
